nbw is in the process of actively and systematically eliminating all genetically-modified ingredients from all of our products.
GMOs (or “genetically modified organisms”) have been created through the gene-splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering). This relatively new science allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacteria and viral genes that do not occur in nature or through traditional crossbreeding methods and have never before been present in the foods we eat.
For example, genes from a fish have been inserted into strawberries and tomatoes, and genes from herbicide-resistant bacteria have been inserted into the soybean products that North Americans eat every day.
so what’s the point?
The point is that genetically modified organisms are not safe. They have been linked to thousands of toxic and allergic reactions and to thousands of sick, sterile, and dead livestock as well as to damage to virtually every organ and system studied in lab animals.
In addition, studies show that the production of GMO crops can result in increased pesticide use, lower crop yields, the creation of “super weeds” and the destruction of the livelihood of farmers in developing countries and first world nations.
why does this matter ?
North Americans have been eating GMO foods since the 1990s. Surprised? That’s because no one told you. While Europe requires mandatory labeling of these food ingredients, the FDA and the Canadian government has decided we don’t need to know.
When it comes to the prepackaged foods that you buy from your local supermarket in North America, if the food is not labeled as Certified Organic and, if the ingredients contain the following: soybean, corn, canola or cottonseed, you’re pretty much guaranteed that you are eating genetically modified food.
what about GMOs and body care?
As it relates to body care, nbw has chosen to support natural, sustainable agriculture. Up to 60% of substances applied to the skin are absorbed into the blood stream, and can be detected in the saliva within minutes of application. Because of this, nbw believes that GMO-free body care is as important as GMO-free food.
nbw asks you
nbw asks you to take action to help end the genetic engineering of our agriculture. We hope you find the links below helpful as you learn more about the food we eat and how to participate in positive change.
